Born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, John Scarlett Newhall and his wife, Elizabeth Foster, came to Monadnock Number Six in about 1770. They had two young children with them. The cellar hole here is approximately 20’ x 20’ with no evidence of a chimney. This is likely the foundation for the “pole house” they built according to the 1774 settlement survey. They had four acres cleared and two more cut over. Josiah was born here in 1770. After there were here a few years, they built a much larger, frame home about 150 yards to the northeast.
