F-3-3

Horace Yardley bought land here from Abiel Wright and built a house in 1856. Born in Dublin to William and Sarah Yardley in 1804, he married Sarah Taylor in 1841. The couple had five children before moving to Nelson in 1856.

Their daughter, Sarah, married William O. Upton of Dublin in 1876. Sarah and William had two children including Frank Eugene Upton, born in Nelson at D-4-27. Horace died in 1902 and Sarah in 1915. They are buried in the Island Cemetery in Harrisville.

They were succeeded by their grandson, Frank Eugene Upton and his wife Francis Rogers. Frank was a fisherman and a guide. Francis died in 1950 and Frank in 1962. They were succeeded here by their son, Frank E. Upton JR.

“Franky” as he was called, was a lumberman and contractor, but was better known as the pilot of a float plane based at Nubanusit Lake and a great raconteur. He died in 2006.

The home was heavily damaged in a fire in 2003, but has been rebuilt.
